To continue our celebration of teachers, we are happy to share that one of our very own was named the 2018-2019 Alternate Alabama Teacher of the Year and the Alabama Elementary Teacher of the Year.

The Jefferson County Board of Education recognizes the passion and dedication of Ms. Meghan Allen at Minor Community School who lives by the well-known motto, “bloom where you are planted.” She is currently in her ninth year of serving as a Special Education Teacher. Having grown up in Alabama, Alaska, Texas, and Georgia, she gained a unique perspective on teaching and learned first-hand the value of exposing students to engaging learning environments and educational experiences.

Ms. Allen strives to prepare all students for bright futures in her self-contained classroom, which she best describes as structured, functional, and interactive. She shared that in her class, all students’ input is needed and valuable. She teaches her students to see each other for their abilities and not their disabilities. They work as a team and build their skills to increase their independence. Her teaching practices are a reflection of her belief that every student can learn and achieve at exceptional levels.

One of Ms. Allen’s goals is to be a champion for inclusion by being a voice for all students, regardless of their special needs. To begin her efforts, she has coordinated a professional learning community for special education teachers, served on the Jefferson County Schools Superintendent’s Teacher Advisory Council, as well as served on the Alabama State Department of Education committees to create new versions of the Alabama Extended Standards.

When she is away from her classroom, she is typically volunteering or traveling internationally to help children in need. Ms. Allen is truly a shining example of a teacher leader and we are grateful that her dedication to students has been recognized by our state. Her roles as Alternate Alabama Teacher of the Year and Alabama Elementary Teacher of the Year will provide many opportunities and we have no doubt that her leadership will continue to positively impact the lives of her students as well as the educational development of our state.

Congratulations Meghan!
